Impact of smart transformer voltage and frequency support in a high renewable penetration system

Abstract Increasing penetration of power electronics interfaced generation decreases the stability system, due to absence rotational inertia in their operation. Emulation using converter controls combination with storages can address this issue. However, method relies on use large quantities storage compensate during a transient unbalance. Instead increasing supply, smart transformer (ST), fast response, offers possibility dynamically regulate demand. This paper investigates an ST control reactive and demand support voltage frequency respectively grid. The is controlled emulate inertia. From analysis based 250 kVA, 10kV/400V LV distribution network, it shown that variation range 6-10% be achieved. These results are extended case study entire all-Island Irish Transmission system which shows widespread STs these could potentially facilitate 10% increase wind without inclusion any other storage.
